DONALD Trump climbed down from his £4.3billion demand for a border wall yesterday  as his proposal to re-open the government failed.

White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders said in a tweet that Trump will accept a “large down payment” on the border wall instead.

Democrats have repeatedly blocked the Republican president’s demands

The Republican president was holding out for the £4.3billion in order to build the structure along the border with Mexico, to keep a long-held campaign promise.

But Democrats, who now hold a majority in the House of Representatives, have repeatedly blocked his demand for the money.

Democrat and Republican leaders were locked in talks last night to end the government shut down – which has lasted more than 30 days.

Trump’s latest plan to reopen the government – with his wall funding – failed 50 votes to 47 in the Senate yesterday.
