MATT Smith is in advanced talks to play a major role in Spiderman spin-off Morbius.
The Crown actor, 36, will star alongside Jared Leto in the latest addition to the Marvel universe which is being directed by Daniel Espinosa, reports Variety.
Leto plays the lead role of scientist Dr Michael Morbius who develops super vampiric qualities while attempting to develop a cure for a rare blood disease.
The standalone film follows Tom Hardy’s Venom, another Spiderman spin-off, which despite being panned by critics upon its release last year went on to achieve huge commercial success, raking in $855million at the global box office.
Production for the project is set to wrap in May although details surrounding the film’s contents remain under wraps.
Earlier this month Leto teased fans by sharing a picture of a mint condition of the Morbius: The Living Vampire #1 comic, asking if he should open the sealed edition.
The news comes hot on the heels of the trailer release for Spiderman: Far From Home.
It remains unclear whether or no the film is a prequel or sequel following Avengers: Infinity War when uber baddie Thanos seemingly killed him.
Nick Fury is the main Marvel cameo in the trailer, but like Spider-Man, he was also vanquished by Thanos.
According to the trailer, Fury has never met Spider-Man before meaning the two never cross paths in Avengers: Endgame.

Likely to keep fans guessing, the issue date on Peter’s passport is also overlooked meaning events could have taken place before the events of Infinity War, which would explain why Peter’s reverted to his Homecoming suit and not his Avengers Iron Spider attire.
A nice easter egg is the reveal that MCU Peter was born on August 10, the same day that Amazing Fantasy #15 was published in 1963, introducing the world to Spider-Man.
Producer Amy Pascal has previously revealed that the film”starts a few minutes” after Avengers: Endgame, which was confirmed last year by Marvel boss Kevin Feige.
